I’m very pleased to open my blog to fellow Dreamspinner author, Emjay Haze today!. She’s interviewing the main characters in her new novel Home is Where You Are published by Dreamspinner Press on January 26th. The Interview

City Boy/Country Boy

The two main characters, Eric and Phil, grew up in the same town, but couldn’t be more different. Eric left the country to live in Burlington and works in a bank, and Phil, born and raised in Glenville, followed his parent’s footsteps and is a farm hand working at Eric’s parents farm and sugar house.

I thought it would be fun to do a character interview of the two main characters before they meet again.

City Boy/Country Boy – Part 1 – Phil

Q. What exactly does a ranch hand do?

Phil: Everything. I work mostly with the sugar operation, making sure the trees are ready for the tapping season and then run the equipment that makes the maple syrup.

Q. Sounds sweet!

Phil: (laughs) Oh, it is.

Q. What is your favorite color?

Phil: I’d have to say orange. I love all of the colors of the sugar maples in the orchard in the fall, but orange is my favorite.

Q. Did you go to college?

Phil: (laughs) I took a few night classes at the community college for a while, but I’m so busy working for Bevington Farms, I don’t really have time.

Q. Do you have a boyfriend?

Phil: (laughs again, shaking his head) This is a small town and an even smaller gay community. I’ve had a couple of friends with benefits, so to speak, but nothing serious.

Q. What was high school like here in Glenville?

Phil: Pretty awful (laughs). There were two types of kids, townies and farm kids. Some of the townies were real jerks.

Q. Were you a townie or farm kid?

Phil: Both, kind of. I lived in town with my parents, but they both worked at Bevington Farms.

Q. Were you picked on in school?

Phil: I was firmly planted in my closet—and my best friend, Donny, played center on our football team. Nobody messed with me.

Q. Are you still friends?

Phil: (Nods) We both work full time, but I see him at the Urban Cowboy.

Q. Do you want to get married?

Phil: Yeah! Someday. I see what my parents have, and the Bevingtons. I want that someday. Don’t know where I’d meet the guy. (Gets a faraway look on his face)

Q. What’s that look for?

Phil: Oh, no—nothing. There was this one guy. I haven’t seen him in years, though. Forget it.

Q. Okay, then. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Phil: I haven’t really been anywhere other than here. I don’t know. I love Vermont.

Q. How about to just visit?

Phil: I went to Maine right after graduating high school for a trip with a friend to fish. That was really fun.

Q. What’s your favorite food?

Phil: Chicken Pot-Pie

Q. Who’s the smartest person you know.

Phil: Easy. Darla. She’s the bartender at the Urban Cowboy, but she’s witty, charming and can talk your ear off. She’s always taking online classes. Mr. Bevington is a really smart guy. Taught me everything about the maple syrup business.

Q. You mentioned the Bevingtons a couple of times. They own the place you work now?

Phil: Yeah, they’re great. They’re like second parents to me, especially Mrs. B.

Q. What do you see yourself doing five or ten years from now?

Phil: I’d love to own a farm/orchard one day. I think I’d be really good at it.

Q. Maybe you’ll taking over Bevington Farms one day?”

Phil: (shrugs) Maybe, who knows?

The Author

Emjay Haze is a Pennsylvania girl living in a Virginia world, growing up in the Philadelphia suburbs and moving to Northern Virginia to follow her now husband of twenty-plus years. She has two kids in college, a year-old puppy named Max, a black-and-white cat named Tux, a gecko named Rex, a yellow tang called Reggie, and we hear the eels are coming this week.

The family pastime is baseball, specifically the Nationals. She’s also a huge Redskins fans and loves classic rock. Emjay graduated with a degree in Creative Writing in 2015 after realizing it was the only thing she really wanted to do.

She has a wide and diverse work history in the fields of travel, hotel management, high-tech communications, web development, real estate, and the nonprofit health care industry where she has held positions such as travel agent, hotel concierge, web programmer, Realtor, account manager, and many, many others, giving her a varied and unique set of experiences that she draws upon in her stories and characters.

Emjay fell in love with the m/m romance genre after discovering the world of fanfiction several years ago and hasn’t looked back. Her family keeps asking when she’ll write something they can read, but she’s still having too much fun with her boys. Her goal is to broaden the minds of those who might not normally pick up a gay romance because it’s more about the person than the sexuality. She’ll take you on a roller-coaster journey, but you’ll always get a happy ending.
