A Writer’s Rite of Passage – Author Photos

As I have a new ebook being released this month, I realized I needed author photos for my upcoming blog tour. Immediately I thought of Angela Karen who had made the awesome couples photos of me and my husband in 2009.

Angela is so thorough. She told me to pick out photos of authors I liked for inspiration and we conferred on what colors might look best on me. It was tough, but in the end I chose four outfits and trooped up to her studio on Morris Avenue.

After a quick makeover to have my face and hair styled, I began posing in her studio, on the chaise, against the wall, on a white background and a black one. Off went the turquoise sweater and the octopus necklace, into the black blazer and professional pin. Then into the lace shirt and flat on my back on the chaise. (That whimsical shot is one of my favorites.)

One final outfit change and we walked out to downtown Birmingham to get some outdoor shots. We trod all over the sidewalks, into the alleyways, looking for pools of light and shadow, interesting architecture, textures and colors to make me look my best. Throughout it all, she asked me about my book, we swapped funny stories, and she kept me entertained and smiling. I felt more like I was spending an afternoon with a friend than getting my picture taken.

Despite paying for her awesome package deal for headshots, I ended up buying all the photos she made. They were just so good!

I call this one “Author In Repose”

And now, because I know you’re dying to see it: I call this one the Author in Repose. Yes, Angela shamelessly indulges my silly side.

If you’re interested, my new ebook is THE BREAK-IN, published by Dreamspinner Press:

Ten years ago, roboticist Forbes Pohle received a visit from time-traveler Oliver Lennox. “Wait for me,” Oliver said. Now a decade has come and gone, and Oliver has returned. However, Forbes never dreamed Oliver would reappear as the point man for a gang of technology thieves breaking into his lab. He finds the younger Oliver just as sexy and even more annoying; still, he must convince him their happily-ever-after is meant to be—but he only has the time it takes his robotic cat Jeepers to thwart the thieves to do it. After waiting so long, he could lose everything in the span
of seconds.
