The Drive To Create

I was listening to an episode of RadioLab and heard both the saddest and most wonderful story.

It recounted the gradual neurological breakdown of both the composer Maurice Ravel and a painter named Anne Adams. Both artists created some of their most memorable pieces while slowly succumbing to progressive aphasia and eventually dementia.

And despite the fact that both artists were quickly becoming unable to create, both still retained the NEED to create. The episode illustrated that creativity is a basic drive, just like hunger, sleep, movement, or sex. Humans need to create and make lasting things of beauty.

I urge you to listen to the story. It’s amazing:
