WereJellyfish? Special Guest Lex Chase Invites Us To Meet The Shifters of Darkmore

I am so pleased to host Lex Chase and her brave new world of non-sparkly vampires! When Lex first approached me about guesting, she warned me that the vampires in her novel Chasing Sunrise published by Dreamspinner Press are not the ones in current vogue.  But as a horror chick from way back, I am happy to see some blood flow with this new breed. What sealed the deal was her incredibly generous offer to donate all the presale proceeds to the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center's Domestic Violence Service. I've already bought my copy. You need to hurry and get yours too! Oh! I almost forgot--there's a Rafflecopter giveaway as well--make sure you enter.

Were...what? Meet the Shifters
by Lex Chase

Hello everyone! I'm Lex Chase and I want to thank Aidee for letting me drop in today for the Chasing Sunrise Blog Tour!

Last Sunday, over on Jaime Samms's blog I introduced readers to my take on the vampire mythos with the aisa. These guys are causing a bit of a stir! You can read more about them and see a rather intense excerpt over here!

Well, now that we're acquainted with the aisa, lets talk about something a little more fluffy. Well. By fluffy, I mean the shifters. Because they have fur? Bad joke is bad!

The shifter races are as varied as the species that populate our planet. You name it, it's there. From avian races, to reptiles, to aquatic shifters, to insect shifters. My guilty pleasures are the weresharks and the werejellyfish.

Yes. Were. Jellyfish. Trust me. You never knew you needed them in your life.

For Chasing Sunrise, we meet the windigo, my version of werewolves, and we meet a type of werecat called the ungati in the form of our hero Jack.

The windigo live in an alternate realm called Priagust, and has been modeled loosely around ancient Rome. They are definitely a pre-lightbulb culture. They are considered the backbone of the shifter races.

Quite possibly the most interesting aspect of the windigo is their very healthy view about sexual relationships. They are an omnisexual people, and are very open about gay, lesbian, bi, trans relationships and every other color of the flag. Gender fluid, asexual, intersexed? No worries! Come on in!

In fact, windigo boys and girls when they become sexually mature are expected to experiment with both other boys and girls. If boys discover they prefer men, and the girls prefer women? That is a-ok! If a man learns all about a man's touch but marries a woman and has children and still likes men? Not a problem! Readers meet just such a windigo couple with Kaltag and his wife Mirabelle. They have a litter of children together (yes a litter!) and both husband and wife are bisexual.

octavia_atia_romeThey also stick to the highest rules of intimate relations. That means no means no under any moment and any circumstance. Something we're still struggling with in our reality to this day.

It is the submissive (for lack of a better word) in a relationship that has all of the power. All of it. From daily lives, to intimacy. Their dominant (for another lack of a better word) respects their wishes at all times and it's expected of them to do so. Even in the act of making love, they cannot begin until the submissive says so, and they agree they want to. If the submissive demands they stop in the middle of it? No questions asked. The dominant respects that, no harm no foul, no argument. Instead an apology and a discussion of what went wrong and how to correct the issue.

The windigo may be werewolves, but they are anything but monsters or savages.

Blurb: Chasing Sunrise The Darkmore Saga: Book One

On the Coastal Bend of Texas, a hidden kingdom called Darkmore lies in ruins, and King Sevon Maraté is trapped. Using Sevon as a mouthpiece and a scapegoat, Lord Dominic rules from the shadows. Sevon copes with the unrelenting abuse by dressing in women's finery and casting an image of graceful nobility. Born of royal verkolai blood and as beautiful as he is lethal, he possesses the ability to part the Veil separating his world from hundreds of others. His gift is his chance to escape, but Dominic refuses to relinquish his tool for power. Dominic forges an ambitious plan to invade the prosperous land of Priagust. Only a select few know the mythic kingdom of shifters exists. Sevon is out of options for his people’s survival, and cooperating with Dominic is his only chance.

On their foray into Priagust, Dominic's men kidnap and interrogate a shifter named Jack. Even under torture, Jack's loyalty to his kind never wavers. But as Jack’s knowledge about Darkmore’s king and its history unsettles Sevon, a curious bond begins to form. Despite Sevon’s mistrust, Jack is determined to tame Sevon’s wild heart and perhaps earn his freedom. As invasion looms, Sevon wonders if trusting Jack will lead him into another trap or if he should forget about chasing the sunrise and remain Dominic's compliant prisoner.

100% of the presale royalties of this book will go to Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center's Domestic Violence Service.

Chasing Sunrise Excerpt

“By Diana!” the familiar voice of Kaltag’s wife gasped three feet behind Sevon. The litter of young children rushed from behind their mother and excitedly gathered around him.

Jack and Kaltag exchanged glances, smirking to each other.

Kaltag grinned. “Beja’s home.”

Mirabelle made a shrill squawk of fright. “And you didn’t tell me Louis’s child is in my house!”

“What did I tell you?” Kaltag murmured to Jack and finished his wine.

“You’re really pretty,” Kaltag’s small daughter Ayla told Sevon.

Kaltag’s other five children toddled along behind Sevon like a row of happy ducklings. Mirabelle brought up the rear, stiff shouldered and horrified. Her onyx waves drooped in her face like a petrified banshee.

Kaltag,” Mirabelle gasped, like she’d swallowed something unfortunate.

“It’s fine, my lady,” Sevon said to Mirabelle with a demure dip of his head. “You have a… lovely home,” he said, considering the primitive décor. Sevon tugged the blanket closer.

“Can I touch your hair?” the middle boy of the litter, Maxim, asked. His chubby fingers reached toward Sevon’s exposed thigh.

“Maxim,” Mirabelle growled, and her dark skin bleached with anxiety.

The little boy frowned and poked his fingers together bashfully.

“Why are you naked?” the eldest girl, Cessily, blurted out, and her siblings oohed a long, conspiratorial note.

Sevon clapped his hand over his mouth to keep from openly laughing. He stooped to their level, meeting each set of amber eyes. “I think your mother wants you guys to go pick her flowers and make the biggest bouquet she has ever seen.”

“Okay!” the children yipped in unison and scampered out into the backyard.

Mirabelle swallowed and the color returned to her features. “I am so… sorry,” she apologized again to Sevon.

Sevon shook his head and smiled. “It’s okay, your… pups are beautiful,” he said, testing the term.

Kaltag puffed his chest and boldly announced, “We’re expecting another litter this spring.”

Mirabelle swatted Kaltag in the shoulder, and Jack punched him in the other one.

LXC_FlamesAbout the Author:
Lex Chase once heard Stephen King say in a commercial, “We’re all going to die, I’m just trying to make it a little more interesting.”She knew then she wanted to make the world a little more interesting.

Weaving tales of cinematic, sweeping adventure, epic love—and depending on how she feels that day—Lex sprinkles in high-speed chases, shower scenes, and more explosions than a Hollywood blockbuster. She loves tales of men who kiss as much as they kick ass. She believes if you’re going to going to march into the depths of hell, it better be beside the one you love.

Lex is a pop culture diva and her DVR is constantly backlogged. She wouldn’t last five minutes without technology in the event of the apocalypse and has nightmares about refusing to leave her cats behind. She is incredibly sentimental, to the point that she gets choked up at holiday commercials. But like the lovers driven to extreme measures to get home for the holidays, Lex believes everyone deserves a happy ending.

Lex also has a knack for sarcasm, never takes herself seriously, and has been nicknamed “The Next Alan Moore” by her friends for all the pain and suffering she inflicts on her characters. She is a Damned Yankee hailing from the frozen backwoods of Maine residing in the ’burbs of Northwest Florida where it could be 80F and she’d be a popsicle.

She is grateful and humbled for all the readers. She knows very well she wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them and welcomes feedback.
